Current research and guidelines have been changed to help develop and individualize the standards of care for each pet. The doctors and staff here at Great Neck Veterinary Clinic have adopted a new protocol to help us better care for your pets. We are currently recommending that each pet be examined twice yearly by a licensed veterinarian.
Visiting us twice a year gives us more time and opportunities to educated you on a variety of topics and allows us to create a more personalized program to suit you and your pet's individualized needs. We have created a disease assessment form for you to fill out during each exam with questions regarding your per so that we can create a vaccine protocol specific to your animal.
Why Twice Yearly?
Dogs and cats mature at an accelerated rate compared to the human aging process. They age seven years for every calendar year.
Adolescents grow even more rapidly, making a one-year old dog into it's teen year and a one-year old cat in it's mid 20's.
Regular vaterinary care is important in all stages of an animal's life.
You will learn more about dental care, nutrition, behavior, parasite control, and disease prevention every visit.
What to Expect During Each Visit?
Each annual visit will consist of:
Examination by the veterinarian
Vaccines individualized for your pet
Heartworm test, our heartworm test also tests for three tick-borne illnesses that can be found in this area.
Fecal Test
Each semi-annual visit consist of:
Examination by the veterinarian
Fecal Test
Bordatella vaccine, if needed
Junior or Senior bloodwork depending on the age of your pet
Why We Reccomend Bloodwork?
Decreasing intervals between visits gives us a better opportunity for early disease diagnosis and intervention. Clinical studies have shown that about 10% of pets have some underlying disease or abnormality. These pets are usually normal upon physical exam, and their illnesses may have gone undetected. Just like in humans, early detection allows for better treatment options and possibly a better outcome. Veterinarians have used wellness profiles to lead to the diagnosis of several diseases and disorders such as:
electrolyte disturbances
thyroid, liver and kidney disease
pancreatitis
neoplasia
gastrointestinal disorders
There are several different panels that we will be reccomending for your pet.
Pre-Surgical Bloodwork
Anytime your pet undergoes a surgical procedure, we reccomend pre-surgical bloodwork. This checks for basic liver and kidney functions as well as hydration. Even
if your animal is young, remember that this will help us establish a baseline for when he or she is older.
Junior Wellnes Profile
This profile is recommended at the semi-annual visit for your pet ages 1-7. This profile checks for a more comprehensive liver and kidney values as well as
pancreatic function, red and white blood cell counts and clotting factors.
Senior Wellness Profile
This profile is more extensive than the Junior Wellness Profile, but also includes a urinalysis. We will recommend this profile for your pet starting at age 8 and
every year there-after at his or her semi-annual visit.
